Bring fun, joy and play into your life | The importance of living a playful life

Do you know what's fun for you?
Do you have hobbies you enjoy?
Do you know how to relax your mind and body?
Do you often incorporate "me time" in your week?

Four simple questions to which each and everyone of us should be able to answer, on the spot, with a big fat YES.

Life Coaching Quote

Life is meant to be enjoyable, playful and fun.

Unfortunately that is not the case. In fact, in my practice as a life coach when using the wheel of life, -a simple yet powerful tool, that gives both me and my client a clear snapshot of his/her life-, I often see people not only reporting extremely low satisfaction scores in the Fun and Recreation life sector, but are also having a hard time figuring out what is fun according to them -not according to current trends or society's perceived notions of fun- and more often than not, directly correlate having fun with spending money.

Life is 10,000 joys and 10,000 sorrows, accruing to the Buddha and it seems like after 8 to 10 hours of work and in spite our innate yearning for happiness, most of us are so focused on the 10.000 sorrows that we become almost blind to the 10.000 joys, patiently waiting to be lived and experienced.

We are so used to keeping ourselves busy, constantly working on proving (!!!) we are worthy, of appreciation, social acceptance, wealth or recognition, that we forget to stop from time time and simply Be. And even when we do stop, it's hard to invite joy into our lives, because we can hardly recognise it, anymore. We have forgotten how it feels to be playful, joyful and have genuine fun.

In reality, for all of us lost in the bustle of everyday life, figuring out what we consider to be fun, can take a lot of time and deep self exploration and even then, we might still end up exorcising fun and recreational activities to our weekends, suffocating our fun-deprived-selves into flat, dull, all-work-no-play, workweeks.

There is no better time than now, for you to start experiencing life in a playful manner.[tweet this]

In the recent post "Reduce Daily Stress and Pamper yourself Silly with Small Acts of Self Care", I urged you to take the time, during the week, to pamper your self, indulge in luxury and start taking care of your number one asset: yourself.  Today, I am inviting you to make some space in your life for your gratification and delight, only. I encourage you to bring more joy and play into your everyday life. To enjoy your days and have genuine fun.

So not postpone your fun till the next weekend. There is no better time than now, for you to start experiencing life in a playful manner.

  • Take some time to think about how joyful you feel, today.
  • Write down how many hours a week you normally set aside, solely for your personal enjoyment or amusement.
  • Determine what's fun for you, do not limit yourself in "ha-ha funny", or "outdoor fun" activities only. Anything goes. From reading books, to spending time on Pinterest and going for a simple walk.
  • Brainstorm ideas that sound amusing enough, activities that will bring more play and lightness into your every day life.
  • Whatever you decide is fun for you, go for it.

If living a well balanced life, is important to you, then fun and recreation should not be an afterthought. Make them a priority. Create space for them in your life. Schedule some "fun time" into your calendar to refill you energy tank and remember to have fun, while at it!

Much like happiness, having fun is all about choice. I choose to be playful and have fun every day. Thank you for sharing this.

So, so true Barbara! Having fun is a choice and there is not such thing as "not enough time". We are all responsible for making time for ourselves.

Thank you for the reminder, Nichole. I love going on hikes and it always makes me feel alive and rejuvenated. Life is too short and valuable, we have to live it up!

Great thoughts i do agree, part of the meaning of life is to enjoy, and like you said, not from the influences some think are fun... Doing what we love, and exploring life is some of the best.. and just breaking the regular routines of the every day hustle and bustle.. great article.. much love and keep the wise words going!!!

To me, it's the little things that make me feel joyful, like taking the time to relax and read a good book or go for a walk and man, I do then often enough these days.

Hit the spot for me. I am totally a weekend fun kind of girl. Almost no fun during the week. Maybe some reading now and then but nothing more. Thank you for sharing N.
