Getting Unstuck 101 | Stop the Mind Chatter, Ask the Right Questions.

5/2/2014

So you are stuck, -which by the way is a classic sign you’re too close to making something BIG happen-, you feel overwhelmed, your energy is low and your mind chatter is so loud that nothing makes sense anymore and you can't feel anything other than frustration and tension.

You are thinking:
“I feel so lonely.”
“I hate my job.”
“My relationship sucks.”
“I can’t afford to buy this car.”

And the list goes on and on.

The mental chatter gets louder, your confidence takes a big hit and your find yourself trapped in inactivity, stuck, tangled and disempowered.

Getting Unstuck 101. Changing Your Perspective From Victim to Hero

Before accepting this as your new normal, I have a suggestion for you. A super easy technique, I use with all my clients, to get them unstuck, in just seconds, by interrupting their the mental chatter and changing their perspective, from victim to hero!

WARNING! Major Breakthrough Coming Up!

Rephrase your worry into an empowering question. [tweet this]

Let me say that, one more time.

Rephrase your worry into an empowering question.

When your inner critic is hard at work, creating drama, sabotaging your growth and turning up the volume of negative mind chatter, all you have to do is take a breather to interrupt the pity party, ask yourself one simple question and then wait for your inner guru to take charge and help you see possibility where there was none. Then focus on that one, simple next step, in front of you and take action.  That’s it. Getting unstuck 101.

Let’s see how it works with one of the paralysing thoughts above, shall we?

It’s Monday morning and you are feeling stuck and overwhelmed thinking “I hate my job, my boss does not appreciate what I do, the money aren’t enough etc” and before you know it, you are literally spiraling into a depressed state and your whole day is ruined.

Luckily enough, you now have a remarkable technique, right at your fingertips!

So, after noticing the negative mind chatter, give yourself a few minutes to take 3-5 deep breaths and then rephrase what your inner gremlin just said into an empowering question, such as “What is the first thing I could do today, that will get me closer to finding a new job, that I would love and in which I will feel appreciated and financially secure?”

And then wait.

It might take a few seconds or a few minutes but the answer will come, in the form of some sort of action or another and instead of spiralling into self-doubt you will now have a chance  to actually deal with the challenge itself by taking ACTION. Action creates the momentum you need, to get to the next step!

It’s easy to remember, simple to apply and will transform the way you experience life’s hiccups.
Give it a try, it will amaze you.

I think what you've hit upon is key, Nichole. You have to get out of the victim mindset and realize that you do have control. Maybe you can only do one small thing today to move forward, but the momentum grows quickly. My empowering question is similar to the example you used: "What can I do today to create my own business that would provide the financial freedom and independence I crave?"

Really great tip. Although I work hard to keep a positive attitude, like anyone, negative thoughts do come to mind when I'm feeling down. I'm going to keep this little technique in mind when I'm feeling negative about my progress :-)

I love the quote that says "the moment you're ready to quit is usually the moment right before a miracle happens...don't give up". I just remind myself that taking action, as small or as simple as it might be, is better than no action taken at all. Thanks for the reminder to focus on the positive!

What a great suggestion, Nicole!
We just have to practice turning our feeling of helplessness to action!
Because if we're ever in that state of victimhood, it means that we feel we can't change our destiny, but by taking action, we are!
thank you. :)

I never realized I've been using these techniques as coping strategies. You see, in 2001 I lost someone close to me who was 25. I was heart broken and grief stricken. But somehow in those moments I would choose to do things that made me happy. Whether it was take a class, go out with friends, etc. I chose to live in happiness instead of sadness. This is the difference between those who look at the world as glass half full instead of glass half empty. The choice to take small action steps! Love this post Nichole!

Thank you so much Marina. I love your take on life.

Yes, the glass is always half-full, in fact it is always full, maybe not with water but with air particles,.

Our life is full with everything we take for granted every day, like our good health, or having a roof over our heads, or belonging to the worlds's wealthier 2%...

Hi Nicole- Yes! Mo matter what situation we find ourselves in there is always something we can do that can help us to help ourselves. Ask powerful questions, actually answering them and taking a small step can make all the difference in living the life we desire. An empowering question for myself today would be, "How can I make working at this moment more fun?"

Nichole, Love the motivation to expect a miracle and the suggestion to turn chatter into a question. I find that I have to first question the chatter itself. I know that anything that makes me feel like a victim is always from my ego so right there I know it's not true. When you align with what you call your inner guru (love that) or whatever you choose to call your inner Spirit...it will always guide you in a way you can trust. Thank you for this oh so helpful post!

Nichole: your posts always rock! Yes: taking 3-5 deep breaths helps me to refocus and regroup. I like the idea of asking an empowering question. That practice can definitely help me get out of the negative thought spiral and bring about positive call for action and change. Love this!

I love the idea of flipping negative thoughts right on their heads!! We unfortunately give too much power over to those negative thoughts. So, I really like the idea of phrasing it not only into a question, but an empowering one. Shows that we hold the power of creating our own direction.

Definitely going to use this technique this week!
